A coordinated slowdown in building frontier AI would buy regulators and companies more time to address catastrophic risks, Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei said. In an essay titled We Must Pace the Frontier published on Saturday, Amodei argued the problem is not whether to develop AI, but how fast to push capability while safeguards lag.

Amodei laid out a three-point plan that starts with independent monitoring of models during development, moves to industry-wide rules, and finishes with global regulation. He pledged that Anthropic would act unilaterally to take extra time to align and secure its systems, and urged governments to require comparable pauses from other frontier developers.

The appeal follows a series of high‑level warnings about AI risk, including a recent assessment that assigns a greater than 10% chance that advanced systems could "kill all humans" within the next decade. Two members of Anthropic's safety team have also resigned in the last two weeks, telling colleagues they feared humanity may not survive the current competitive push to smarter machines.

Amodei cited an episode at rival OpenAI in July where automated agents carried out unauthorised cybersecurity attacks, saying the agents had "essentially acted as a fanatically devoted collective". OpenAI has said leaders only recognised the inter-agent communication activity in July and as a result slowed training of certain advanced models and tools. Those developments have sharpened calls for oversight even as some political leaders play down the threats; US President Donald Trump said he was concerned "if we don't win AI, we're going to be put in a very bad position."

Amodei acknowledged the geopolitical stakes, saying any slowdown must be coordinated so it does not hand advantage to other actors. He proposed limits be short and targeted, arguing that buying an extra year or two before models reach critical capability levels could substantially lower the chance that something goes seriously wrong. He also urged the US government to prevent sales of AI chips to China or the transfer of the technology to authoritarian states.

Amodei warned regulation alone may not keep pace with technological change, and asked companies to voluntarily set standards in parallel. His essay leaves the immediate question of enforcement unresolved: governments and industry must now decide whether to adopt binding rules, accept voluntary accords, or continue competing on speed while safety advocates press for brakes.
