A vacancy opens in Gumel’s traditional leadership after the death of Ahmed Muhammad-Sani, who died on Thursday afternoon at a hospital in Egypt at the age of 85, ending a 46-year reign.
The emir’s passing follows the recent death of another northern traditional ruler, Bello Suleiman, the Emir of Zurmi in Zamfara State, who died on Monday at the Federal Medical Centre, Gusau. The two deaths came within four days of each other.
Ahmed Muhammad-Sani’s formal education began at Gumel Primary School from 1948 to 1953, continued at Hadejia Middle School from 1953 to 1956, and concluded secondary studies at Rumfa College, then Kano High School, in 1961. He earned a Diploma in Public Administration from the Institute of Administration in Zaria in 1963 and a Higher Diploma in 1970. Between 1972 and 1978 he attended Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, earning a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a postgraduate degree in International Relations.
His early career started with the Gumel Native Authority from 1961 to 1963, and he joined the Nigeria Immigration Service in 1964, serving in Gamboru Ngala, Borno State. He moved into public administration in 1972 as a senior official at the Kazaure Divisional Office. In 1978 he stood for a Senate seat under the Great Nigeria People’s Party, and after that campaign he entered state government in the old Kano State as Commissioner for Information, Internal Affairs, and Culture from 1978 to 1980.
While commissioner he was involved in shaping the state’s media environment, overseeing the creation of The Triumph newspaper and CTV67 television, now ARTV, and supporting the expansion of Radio Kano. His political trajectory shifted back to traditional authority after the death of his father, the then-reigning Emir of Gumel, on 13 December 1980. Three days later, on 16 December 1980, he was selected to succeed his father and formally assumed the stool.
Muhammad-Sani’s death removes a long-serving traditional ruler whose career bridged local administration, state government and modern media development in the region. Further announcements about the emirate’s next steps have not been recorded in the available account.
