Five people arrested at the site of an attack on a Methodist Church in Fiwasaye, Osogbo, have been taken into custody and an investigation opened, the Osun State Police Command said. The command identified the suspects as Tajudeen Hassan, Adewale Yusuf, Kabiru Abdulsalam, Olanrewaju Abiodun and Adewale Mujidat. Police said they detained the group where the incident occurred and recovered a red Yamaha motorcycle bearing registration LRG 143 QE.
Police said the disturbance began on 20th September 2026, at about 1040hrs, when a football played on a fallow parcel beside the church resulted in a ball entering the church compound and breaking a louvre glass window. Officers said the youths then threw stones into the premises, causing further damage to additional louvre windows and the rear glass screen of a Mitsubishi owned by a church member.
Iludun Division officers responded to a distress call and apprehended the suspects at the scene, the command's public relations officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, said in a statement. The command reported that a motorcycle found at the location was recovered and will form part of the inquiry.
State Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Zungura directed that the probe be conducted professionally and in line with the law. Zungura urged the public, especially young people, to exercise restraint and avoid actions that escalate minor disagreements into violence or property destruction. The command also pledged that appropriate legal action will follow once investigators complete their work.
The arrests come amid a separate police warning about an alleged planned protest linked to a group described as the "Congress of Cultists", which the command said is associated with the Neo-Black Movement, also known as Black Axe. Authorities cautioned anyone planning to disrupt public order to reconsider.
Investigators will examine the recovered motorcycle and the damaged property as part of the case file. The command's public statements indicate the matter will proceed through the criminal justice system after the investigation is finalised.
