The NDC demanded a full investigation and pledged to continue mobilisation after what the party described as an unprovoked attack on its members at a grassroots meeting in Obuoffia Ward, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State. In a statement issued late Sunday, the party said the incident represented an assault on its constitutional right to assemble and organise.
Osa Director, the NDC national publicity secretary, characterised the attackers as suspected state-sponsored thugs and warned that such assaults must stop. The statement said the incident was part of a pattern of violence against the party’s organisers in the South-East and accused security agencies of complacency in responding to attacks on opposition groups.
The party recalled separate alleged attacks on its members in Imo State during a town hall meeting and consultation organised by its senatorial candidate, Uche Onyeagocha. It also singled out the All Progressives Congress in Enugu, saying the APC appeared “jittery and disturbed” by the opposition’s growing momentum.
The NDC framed the assault as an attempt to intimidate citizens, but it said any effort to instil fear had failed. “If the goal of those sponsoring these thugs and attacks is to instil fear in the hearts of the people, they have failed woefully,” the statement read. The party added that the violence would only harden its resolve to canvass and mobilise ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Directly addressing security agencies, the NDC urged a thorough probe to identify both the perpetrators and their alleged sponsors and to ensure those responsible face justice. “The NDC will not be cowed. We will continue to organise, mobilise, and defend the democratic space,” the party said.
The party’s remarks set the scene for potential political and legal follow-up: investigators could face pressure to act, and the NDC plans to maintain public mobilisation across the South-East despite the reported attacks.
