Ning Xu of Tsinghua University in Beijing won Nikon's Small World in Motion competition with a super-resolution microvideo that captures irregular beating of airway cilia from a child diagnosed with Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia, a genetic disorder that impairs respiratory function.

The single most immediate outcome is a competition victory: Xu's entry bested 346 other video submissions representing 40 countries. The contest, founded in 2011 as a moving-image offshoot of Nikon's long-running Small World Photomicrography Competition, spotlights what light microscopy can reveal when it records motion rather than stills.

Xu's winning clip shows cilia that move abnormally, a hallmark of PCD. In people with this condition the microscopic, hairlike structures that line the airways can be the wrong size or shape, missing entirely, or incapable of their normal wave-like motion that clears mucus, dust, and pathogens. When those clearing motions fail, irritants accumulate and the risk of respiratory infections rises.

The Small World in Motion contest exists to exploit recent advances in microscope imaging that allow researchers and hobbyists to make movies and time-lapse sequences through light microscopes. By privileging motion, the competition collects examples of dynamic cellular and subcellular processes that photographs cannot fully convey, from beating cilia to other biological rhythms and mechanical behaviours at microscopic scales.

The award highlights two threads: the technical progress that makes high-resolution microvideo feasible and the diagnostic clarity dynamic imagery can provide for structural and functional defects such as those seen in PCD. Nikon’s motion contest, established in 2011 and derived from a competition that began in 1974, continues to attract global entries that demonstrate how microscopic motion can document both beauty and pathology under the microscope.
